Name: Azura
Canon: Fire Emblem Fates
Canon Point: end of Chapter 26, Revelation route
Age: never stated, headcanon is 19
History: boop
Personality:
Fire Emblem, as a series, has several recurring character archetypes through its many incarnations. Following in the footsteps of Geneology's Deirdre and Blazing Sword's Ninian, Azura is of the "mysterious tragic maiden" variety. Her life has been a difficult one--when she was young, her father was murdered and her kingdom was massacred. When she and her mother manage to find a new life for themselves, she's ostracized and tormented for getting in the middle of a power struggle. While still a child, she's kidnapped and used as bargaining chip--a bargain that never falls through, forcing Azura to adjust to life in another new land.
By and large, Azura's life has been an incredibly lonely one. The rejection she received from the Nohrian court simply for being the new queen's daughter scarred her, and the rejection she received from the Hoshidan people simply for being Nohrian by marriage cemented her mindset. As a child, she was deeply depressed, sinking into suicidal feelings and retreating into herself. Though her mental health has significantly improved, she's still a very withdrawn person. She's quiet, soft-spoken, enjoys spending time alone, and is more likely to sit with her own thoughts than talk with others, even among a crowd. She's often expressionless and seems to lack a sense of humor at times, and she keeps cool under pressure, even in dangerous situations. She's also very blunt and not afraid of telling someone what she thinks of them, rudeness be damned. However, it's not done out of malice, but because she believes criticism will help one improve themselves. To strangers, Azura can come off as aloof and cold, though it's a cultivated image made in hopes of shielding herself from further hurt, as she has difficulty trusting people due to how she's been treated. It's due to her feelings like this that Azura can also be very passive at times. The universe has thrown so much at her, sometimes she's just tired of it and willing to roll with the punches rather than fight and be let down again when something else bad inevitably happens to her.
Azura is terrified of rejection, and wants nothing more than genuine affection from other people. This shows in whichever character she ends up marrying: she'll shower them with affection herself. Her dedication to Corrin is an extension of this: they were the first person not related to her to befriend her and become genuinely close to her, and she repays it with following them to the ends of the Earth, even if it means turning against Hoshido or Nohr. Despite the Hoshidan royal siblings loving her deeply and thinking of her as a member of their family, Azura feels unworthy of their love and once Corrin, their actual sibling, reappears, she tells them that they can pretend to stop accepting her now. When they assure her that it was never faked, Azura's nearly reduced to tears. In the same vein, she also feels guilty that she stole Corrin's place with the Hoshidans from them, and is unworthy of their acceptance at all.
It's only with someone she greatly trusts that Azura will let down her walls. She can actually be quite mischievous with those she feels comfortable around, such as when she tells ghost stories to Sakura in order to tease and frighten her. She also has a great love for cute things, and will break her mask of stoicism when she sees something that catches her eye. Though she is jaded and world-weary, Azura still wants to make a difference and help people. The world has not been kind to her, but she still dreams of peace and happiness, and beneath her layers of aloofness, she is kindhearted and gentle, and incredibly courageous, willing to sacrifice her life to defeat the final bosses in Birthright and Conquest.
Azura's an entertainer even in her private life, and she takes her craft seriously. She offers to sing for Corrin to help them relax, and is known to take requests for anyone who wants to just hear a song. This extends to her hobbies other than singing, too, like the aforementioned ghost stories--she puts on a big show of building up the mystery and is a very good storyteller. She's a performer at heart and her mild personality disappears when she is on stage or tasked with doing anything that requires gusto, such as when she mans the lottery shop and more or less takes up the persona of a carnival worker.
Abilities & Skills:
• Pendant magic: Using her pendant and the incantation song that activates it, Azura is able to use water magic with a variety of applications all along the healing/purification spectrum. In canon, she's used it to quell violent thoughts and calm someone down while they were in a berserker rage, clear someone of brainwashing/mind control, do a kind of spiritual exorcism, and lift a curse. However, use of her pendant for anything that big causes her a great deal of pain, and if she keeps pushing herself, she will eventually dissolve into water and die.
• Dragon blood/dragon veins: as the ancestors of the royal families drank the blood of the First Dragons, she has a sort of "dragon blood" in her, despite not being an actual dragon. This manifests in being able to manipulate Dragon Veins, spiritual ley-lines that exist throughout the landscape, and use them to terraform it. In canon, Dragon Veins have been used to dry up rivers, freeze lakes, flatten mountainous terrain, call up miniature cyclones, rock slides, and firestorms, and heal anyone standing on the veins, among many other elemental/weather effects.
• Curse of Valla: less a power and more an unfortunate side effect, Azura is unable to talk about her homeland or what happened to it without...also dissolving into water and dying.
On the mundane side, Azura's very athletic and physically strong, owing to both her training as a dancer and as a soldier. She's able to fight quite well with lances and other polearm-like weapons.
Inventory/Companions:
• Her pendant
• Her lance
Choice: Witch
Reason: Although Azura uses powerful magic in canon, it's not Fire Emblem's traditional sort of magic, learned by mages, but something she inherited and could use automatically. I think it would be interesting to have her actually learn how to use magic! And also get her to use something besides water/healing spells, haha.
